2008? what?
This upcoming New Year, (or maybe it already is the new year, depending on when you read this) is a chance to "start over", reinvent yourself, redefine who you are, and to begin a new chapter or volume in your book.
With the upcoming entrance of the year 2008 we seem to be constantly surrounded with the chatter and pressure to create a list of our resolutions as the muffled wind howls outside the door; it is easy to sadly get caught up in the things we wish we did but did not get done in 2007. We sometimes forget that things on our to-do list do not instantly disappear at the stroke of midnight on December 31 (Jan 1st) each year. Some tasks slop over messily from 11:59 PM to 12:01 AM. Some tasks simply take a long time.
As humans we tend to like hold a belief that this new year mark the start of better days. Yet when we grieve on all the "negative" things of the previous year, the natural instinctual tendency is to stand at the threshold of a new year looking back instead of looking forward. We seem to have a subconscious fear that to move on seems like an act of betrayal of or abandonment of the one we love.We all have learned a lot this past year in our on ways and each of us have experienced personal grief. We know we are not the only ones who grieve, yet sometimes we feel as though we are the only one, lost and imprisoned in our own minds/selves, but remember we still survive, even though at times we questioned if the struggle was worth it; each of us have tasted the bitterness of loss but have not allowed it to destroy us. None of us can do it alone. We need each other to lean on and celebrate our newness. Just like the Temptations song "Sometime in our lives we all have pain We all have sorrow But if we are wise we know that there's Always tomorrow Lean on me when you're not strong and Ill be your friend, ill help you carry on for it wont be long till I'm gonna need somebody to lean on." Be that one person whom people can turn to, have that magnetic personality that everyone strives for.Do onto others how you would want to be treated, cliche i know but it does hold water/truth.
Past is the past, yet during this turn of the new year look back embrace the good old days; for when you sing "Auld Lang Syne" the "New Years Song' (which actually originated in Scotland not by Robert Burns)the song is about the "long long ago" or "for old time sake" So don't forget the past, instead learn from your mistakes and use it to your advantage.
Make this new year, the best it can be, even if you don't accomplish everything you hope, live life to the fullest, enjoy every days as if it were your last. Have fun, screw what other people think, for in reality, all you have is yourself. Learn to love yourself in all your "flaws." They are what make you unique. be who you want to be, do what you want to do and don't let anyone get in your way of accomplishing your goals, dreams and desires.
